The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise discovers the disaster record-marker of the S.S. Valiant, which encountered a unknown energy barrier at the rim of the galaxy several years ago; something made its captain destroy his ship, and the crew had been searching library tapes for any information on psionics just before it was destroyed. When the Enterprise later arrives at the edge of the galaxy the same force affects its drive system. Meanwhile, Captain Kirk’s close friend, Lieutenant Gary Mitchell, has his latent psionic abilities boosted by the force; he gains phenomenal extrasensory powers, including the ability to move objects with his mind and to control his own heart rate. After Doctor Elizabeth Dehner is also affected by the force, but to a lesser degree, she and Mitchell become drawn together by their common powers. Mitchell's incredible abilities continue to grow, and he becomes more dangerous and shows signs of megalomania. Spock surmises that when the Valiant experienced the same phenomena its captain and crew sacrificed themselves in order to prevent the power from taking over the galaxy. When Mitchell informs Kirk that he is becoming a god, and will rule over humanity, the captain realises that for the sake of all life in the galaxy, he must kill his best friend…
